It’s that time of the week again: The time where we take a look at what local security bloggers have been up to.

If you can’t get enough of the local security scene, be sure to check out our NovaInfosec Twits list for even more great security blogs and people to follow on Twitter. Be sure to follow us on Twitter @grecs if you want to know more about what’s going on in the local security community during the week.

#3 – JMU Cyber Defense Competition: These types of defense-focused competitions seem all the rage these days. The JMU competition enables participants to develop their skills on to “correct problems on their network of machines, perform IT-related business tasks, keep critical systems operating, and defend their networks from the attackers”.  Although attacks were successful, “the teams were all very effective in configuring their firewalls to prevent attacks, and prevent successful privilege execution”. You can read about what worked for the teams here

#2 –Sunburn On Cloudy Day: A highlight of the dangers of cloud computing, as organizations do not control their data/backups. Even though outsourcing “services and infrastructure to the Cloud, we don’t outsource responsibility”. This serves as a good warning to us all that these types of services can help us alot but we still need to proceed with caution. You can read the post here

#1 –Protect The Data Idiot: Richard Bejtlich gets us thinking outside of the box again, he argues that data is a non-figurative concept that can take on many forms. You cannot interact with data unless you interact with its container, you cannot touch or hold data unless you interact with its container. Data can only be in two states, in transit or at rest, both of which must take place within a container. The post doesn’t disappoint; with a look at how data doesn’t exist without a container, this is one post you don’t want to miss. Richard Bejtlich also had several posts on the same topic “Protect the data” from Whom?, Protect the data” Where?, and Protect the data” What Data? that you also don’t want to miss.

Well, that’s all this week. Be sure to check back next week for more great blog posts from local security bloggers.
