If you haven’t already heard about the awesome work that Johnny Long and the other members of Hackers for Charity are doing, I highly encourage you to check it out. I know that I have been blown away on multiple occasions when I’ve read about their dedication to helping children in impoverished countries by getting them the technology and tools they need to build a better life for themselves.
In Johnny’s own words:
Even in the world’s most remote areas, computer skills (especially word processing) provide an extremely viable source of sustainable income. By providing relevant, marketable skills training, students are empowered, providing them with a bright future in which they can support themselves and their families without the need for charitable “handouts”.
Needless to say, Johnny and the other Hackers for Charity staff can’t do this alone. Whether you have old computer/hacker gear or a little bit of money to spare (every few bucks helps!) please consider giving it to this worthwhile cause. Johnny recently announced that he, his wife, and his children will be going to live in Africa for a year, and they are trusting in the financial support of the hacker community to make that happen.
The hacker community has already stepped up amazingly in the past (funding trips for Johnny and his wife to go to Africa on mission trips), and I’m sure that they will again, but I just wanted to introduct Hackers to Charity to anyone who may not have heard of it before, or who have heard of it but haven’t had the chance to check it out.
If you’re able to donate now, BigFix is currently matching donations up to $5,000 worth. So if you can only give $5, it automatically becomes $10, $20 becomes $40, and so on and so forth. But like all good things, the time for matching is limited, so I highly recommend that you donate now if you can.
Thanks for reading; I know that the last thing most people want to read is a post about giving money considering the current economy, but if you are in a place to give, it would be greatly appreciated.
